After I began my journey of reducing my use of paper and plastic, I began realizing there are so many other things I can do to save Mother Earth. The things I have started focusing on and learning more about are clothing, makeup, how items that I buy are sourced/made, and the values of the companies that I support. I have a whole lot left to learn and will continue to broaden my areas of focus, but I have already learned so much.
My first introduction into sustainable living, outside of
reducing paper and plastic and my general knowledge, was via Amanda Scott of
the @littlesouthenwife on Instagram. She is a Beautycounter consultant and has a
blog https://littlesouthernlife.com/.
I’m not sure how I found her on Instagram, but I am so glad I did. She has been
a huge resource for learning what chemicals are in our makeup items, cleaning
products and so much more. As I am learning more about makeup, I began looking
into Beautycounter and what they stand for. Their mission is to get safer
products into the hands of everyone. They are focused on providing makeup and
skincare that is free of toxic chemicals. Since learning about the company I
have bought many Beautycounter items and have stopped buying any other skincare
and makeup products. I love the quality, knowing there are not harmful chemicals
in the products, and that Beautycounter as a company is working to make all
beauty products safer at the regulatory level.
In addition to Amanda’s blog, one of the resources she refers
to is the Environmental Working Group https://www.ewg.org/.
Like her website, the EWG has broadened my education and has been a constant
source of information.
Thanks to the information Amanda has shared, and what I have
learned from Going Zero Waste, I have
started thinking about the chemicals that are in my detergent, candles and
cleaning supplies.
While I have started this journey of cleaner, less toxic
living, and being more environmentally friendly, I think it is important to say
that I will never do things perfectly. I will constantly be learning and
figuring out how and what I can do better.
Have you thought about the chemicals in items that we use
daily, your makeup or the amount of plastic you use and throw away? If so,
share in the comments.
With Courage,
Katie
